It may seem to some an impossibly daunting task to be conscious of all the components that comprise food justice, but to Woke Foods founder’s Merelis Catalina Ortiz and Ysanet Batista, it’s their mission.

Their solution to being “Woke” about our food can be seen in all aspects of the food they create. It starts with sourcing ingredients from local gardens, then taking those ingredients and utilizing them to create plant-based dishes based on traditional Dominican dishes.

Catering of these healthy options is then offered to the community, with a focus on offering subsidized and affordable options to organizations that couldn’t normally afford them.

As the company grows it wishes to hire more immigrant women, and empower them to become a voice for promoting food justice and food sovereignty around the world.

Woke Foods is currently crowdfunding to promote their endeavors. Find out more about their company and hire them for your events at their website.

Woke Foods is NYC’s first vegan Dominican kitchen. Founded by Merelis Catalina and Ysanet Batista, Woke Foods aims to bring Food Justice to NYC.

Food justice is an intersectional approach to being conscious about all aspects of the food we eat.

There’s the environmental aspect which focuses on sustainable farming techniques, crucial in an era where too often companies leave land pumped full of nitrogen and depleted of all nutrients.

There’s food sovereignty which focuses on land rights, essential to understand if we are to understand current and historical imperialism.

There’s animal rights activism, a necessity that’s clear to anyone who’s seen the atrocities of factory farming.

There’s economic inequality, which can be seen in the obesity fueled by malnourishment, most easily illustrated by the fact that one third of all adults of the United States are obese.

There’s cultural sensitivity and awareness, seen too often in the commercialization of proud traditions, commercialization that ignores the very roots that those traditions wish to uphold.
